Microblading healing stages day by day: your eyebrow healing timeline and aftercare

From day 1 to the final result, this is how your brows change as they heal. Knowing what’s normal at each healing stage saves you a fright: brows that appear darker, that itch or whose colour seems to vanish are all part of the healing process.

The microblading healing process: why your eyebrows change so much

In microblading, fine strokes of pigment are placed in the surface layer of the skin. That area behaves like a small wound: it becomes inflamed, forms a thin scab, renews itself and finally reveals the colour that has settled. That’s why the microblading healing process has several stages and the brow you see on the first day isn’t the one you’ll have a month later.

The microblading healing time is about four weeks until your brows are fully healed, and the final result comes after a second session between 4 and 6 weeks after your microblading appointment. Every skin has its own pace: on oily skin everything tends to be a little slower and the stroke heals softer; on dry or normal skin the flaking is more visible but the hair strokes stay more defined.

Stage What you’ll see What to do
Day 1 Dark brows, some redness or swelling Gently blot away the lymph and don’t touch
Day 2 and 3 Intense colour, a tight feeling Moisturise with a very thin layer of balm
Day 4 to 7 Thin crust, flaking and itching Don’t scratch or pick the flakes
Days 8 to 14 “Ghost” stage: faded or patchy strokes Be patient, the pigment is still there
Days 15 to 30 The colour comes back and settles Protect from the sun, keep moisturising
Weeks 4 to 6 Almost final result Perfecting session

Day 1: initial healing, dark and intense brows

When your session finishes, your new brows will look darker, thicker and with very sharp edges. That’s completely normal: there is colour on the surface and the area is a little inflamed. You may see some redness and a little clear lymph, which subside within a day or two. That same day, gently clean the treated area as we show you in the treatment room, and avoid touching it with unwashed hands.

Antonella’s tip: don’t judge the colour on the first day. Much of that intensity softens as your brows heal, which is why we work with a shade designed for how it will look once healed, not freshly done.

Day 2 and day 3: tightness and very strong colour

During the initial healing phase the colour is at its most intense and the skin may feel tight. This is the stage where moisturising well matters most, but with a tiny amount: a layer that’s too thick suffocates the skin and can lift some of the colour. We explain how to do it step by step in how to moisturise your eyebrows after microblading.

During these days avoid heavy sweating, the sauna, swimming pools and water directly on the brow. It isn’t the time to put makeup on the area either: you’ll find all the timings in when can I wear makeup after microblading.

Day 4 to day 7: scabbing, flaking and itching

This stage closes the first week, the part of the healing period that raises the most questions. From around day 4 or day 5 a very thin crust forms over the strokes and starts to peel away in small flakes. At the same time the itching starts, a sign that the epidermis is renewing. The most important thing: don’t scratch and don’t pick anything off. If you remove a flake too early, you take the colour with it and leave gaps.

  • Let the flakes fall off on their own, usually between day 7 and day 10.
  • If it itches, tap gently around the brow, never on it.
  • Sleep on your back if you can, so the pillow doesn’t rub your brows.

If you want to know exactly how long it takes, read when does the microblading scab fall off, and if the itching worries you, why do eyebrows itch after microblading.

Day 8 to day 14: the “ghost” stage

When the flakes come off, many clients look in the mirror and think their microbladed eyebrows have disappeared. The strokes look greyish, dull or patchy, as if colour were missing. Don’t worry: this is the ghost stage. Under the new skin there’s a slightly opaque layer that doesn’t yet let the colour show properly. Your brows may look incomplete, but it’s simply part of the healing process.

Don’t do anything to “fix” it: don’t draw over it or ask for a touch-up too early. The patches will largely fill in on their own as the skin clears.

Microblading 15 days later and up to day 30

From the second week the colour starts to reappear and settle. By 15 days after microblading you can already see the final shape: softer strokes, better blended with your own hair, and a shade a little lighter than on day 1. Until around day 28 the colour may seem to change from one day to the next, because the skin is still regenerating.

At this stage, protect your brows from direct sunlight. UV light is one of the main reasons the colour lightens or changes tone, and the Costa del Sol sun is strong all year round. We explain what happens in microblading and sun exposure, and why the shade softens in when does microblading colour settle.

4 to 6 weeks: the touch-up session

At the 4 to 6 week mark, the skin has finished healing and it’s time for your touch-up appointment. It’s part of the full treatment, not an extra: in this session we fill in any gaps, adjust the intensity and refine the shape and colour if needed. Afterwards, a similar but shorter and gentler cycle follows, and by around week 10 you have beautiful new brows with their final look.

Powder brows: the first days with microshading

If you’ve had eyebrow permanent makeup with a shaded effect (microshading or powder brows) or a combination with hair strokes, the stages are very similar, although the flaking is usually finer, almost like a powder, and the ghost stage is less noticeable. The aftercare is the same.

Aftercare instructions and tips: what affects the result most

Pigment retention depends on two things: that your microblading artist works at the right depth, and proper aftercare at home. For the best results, the aftercare guidelines are simple, but proper care takes consistency during the first few weeks. Our aftercare tips:

  • Wash your hands before touching the brow area.
  • Avoid direct sun and sunbeds while the skin is healing.
  • No makeup on the area and no makeup technique on the brow until the scab has fallen off.
  • Don’t use scrubs, acids or retinol near the brows for the month after.

With good aftercare, the colour settles much more evenly and the second session comes down to small adjustments, even on sparse brows. Perfect brows are a team effort.

Signs that something isn’t right

Unlike an eyebrow tattoo, microblading usually heals without drama, but message us if you notice swelling that gets worse instead of better after two days, intense heat, pain that’s increasing or yellowish discharge. If you see any sign of infection or allergy, also see your GP.

FAQs about the microblading healing stages

How long does microblading take to heal?

The surface heals in about 10 days, when the flakes come off, but the skin takes around four weeks to finish regenerating and show the real colour.

Is it normal for the pigment to seem to disappear?

Yes. Between day 8 and day 14 the strokes look dull or patchy. It’s the ghost stage, and the colour shows again over the following weeks.

When will I see the final result?

After the touch-up, which is done 4 to 6 weeks after the first session, and once that touch-up has healed.

Why do my brows look uneven while healing?

Because the scab doesn’t fall off the whole brow at once and each area of skin holds the pigment at its own pace. Any unevenness left at the end is corrected at the touch-up.

Can I exercise during the first few weeks?

Avoid heavy sweating, the sauna and the pool for at least the first 10 days, until the scab has fallen off.
