When does microblading colour settle? The healing process of your brows day by day
Microblading colour starts to lighten around day 5 to 7, when the scab comes off. Between day 8 and 14 it seems to disappear (the ghosting phase) and it comes back from the third week. Between weeks 4 and 6, once your brows heal, you see the true colour: 30 to 50% lighter than on the first day. Trust the process.
Why do microbladed brows look so dark before they heal?
Straight after the microblading procedure, your eyebrows look darker, thicker and with very sharp edges. It’s completely normal and has three causes:
- Pigment on the surface. Some colour sits on top of the skin and in the scab, not inside the stroke. It will go as the skin flakes.
- Inflammation. The skin reacts as it would to a small wound. The treated area swells slightly and the redness makes the strokes look darker.
- Contrast. On fair or delicate skin the contrast between skin and colour is more noticeable in the first days, along with a little tenderness.
That’s why you shouldn’t judge your microblading results before the brow is completely healed. At BLUSH Estética, Antonella, your microblading artist, chooses the shade with the healed brow in mind, not how it looks fresh.
When does eyebrow microblading colour settle? Healing stages day by day
The colour change follows the microblading healing process. Every brow takes its own time to heal, but these are the usual stages of healing:
| When | How the colour looks |
|---|---|
| Days 1 to 4 | Very dark and intense, sharp strokes |
| Days 5 to 7 | Flaking begins and the colour lightens in patches |
| Days 8 to 14 | Ghosting phase: grey or dull strokes, may vanish in some areas |
| Days 15 to 28 | The colour is coming back and settles while the skin continues to heal |
| Weeks 4 to 6 | Complete healing: true colour, final shape and colour before the follow-up |
Healing time varies with skin type; you’ll find each phase explained in full in the microblading healing stages day by day.

Days 5 to 7: initial healing, the scab takes the excess colour
In the initial healing, a very thin scab forms over the strokes and the brow starts to flake. As it comes away, it takes the surface colour with it and your eyebrows look visibly lighter. Don’t pick it: let the brow heal on its own. If you want to know exactly when it happens, we explain it in when does the microblading scab fall off.
Days 8 to 14: the colour seems to disappear
This is the phase that worries people most. Under the new skin there is a slightly cloudy layer that hides the pigment, and the brows can look faded or patchy. Don’t worry: it is part of the healing process and the pigment is still there. As the skin renews itself and continues to heal, it becomes clearer and the colour comes back from around day 10.
Weeks 3 to 6: the shade stabilises
From the third week the strokes look crisper, blended with your own brow hairs and softer in tone. By week 4 to 6 the skin has had time to fully heal and you see the final colour of the initial microblading session.
How much does microblading colour lighten?
With good aftercare, the colour usually ends up 30% to 50% lighter than on day 1. It isn’t that the microblading is fading away: the dark initial tone was surface pigment and inflammation. What remains once the brows heal is the pigment held in the upper layer of skin.
Several factors make the intensity drop more or less:
- Skin type. Oily skin holds less pigment and the strokes heal softer and more diffused; the colour can fade faster. On dry or normal skin, hair strokes stay more defined.
- Sun. Unprotected sun exposure lightens the pigment and can shift its tone. We cover it in microblading and sun exposure.
- Aftercare. Scratching, picking scabs, getting the brow wet or using too much cream can interfere with pigment retention. Follow aftercare instructions closely: a minimal amount of cream, never soaking the brow.
- Medication and skincare. Some treatments, and products with acids or retinol near the brow, speed up colour loss.
- Habits. Sauna, swimming pools or heavy sweating in the first days also play a part.
Antonella’s tip: if you see gaps during the ghosting phase, don’t draw over them or ask for an early touch-up. Wait until week 4 to 6: many of those gaps fill in by themselves and any that remain are corrected at the touch-up.
Can microblading colour change shade as the brow heals?
Microblading isn’t permanent: the colour will fade over time. If a good product was used at the right depth, it lightens while keeping a similar tone. When it is placed too deep or isn’t good quality, it can turn bluish, grey or reddish. If that’s your case, read what to do when microblading has gone wrong.
The touch-up: the step that sets the final colour
The microblading touch-up, a follow-up appointment, takes place 4 to 6 weeks after your first microblading. It’s part of the treatment, not an extra: areas where the skin didn’t hold colour are filled in, the intensity is adjusted and, if needed, the design is refined. Afterwards the brows heal again and lighten slightly, but less and faster.
Over the months microblading naturally gets lighter. Results can last 12 to 24 months; to keep them, a yearly top-up, or every 12 to 18 months depending on your skin, is recommended; at BLUSH the annual top-up costs €170. More details in how long does microblading last.
Eyebrow permanent makeup: does it heal the same way?
With shaded eyebrow permanent makeup (microshading or powder brows) the process is similar: the colour also looks dark in the first days and softens after flaking, although the flaking is finer and the ghosting phase is less noticeable. Microshading tends to last a little longer on oily skin.

FAQ about microblading colour settling
How long does it take for microblading to heal and lighten?
It starts to lighten around day 5 to 7, as the scab comes off. The final shade shows 4 to 6 weeks after the treatment.
Is it normal for microblading to disappear at day 10?
Yes. Between day 8 and 14 the strokes may look erased. It’s the ghosting phase and the colour returns in the following weeks.
What if my brows are still very dark?
Be patient until the brows heal. If after week 6 the shade is still too dark, it’s assessed at the follow-up. There are options to lighten the pigment.
Can microblading colour disappear completely?
Over the years it lightens a lot, but it rarely disappears altogether. That’s why maintenance touch-ups exist.
How can I make the colour last longer?
Wear a hat and protect the brow from the sun, wait before wearing makeup on it, don’t scratch it, moisturise it with very little cream while it heals, and avoid acids and exfoliants on the area.
