How long does microblading last? Months, touch-up and annual top-up for your brows

Short answer: microblading typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on your skin and how you look after your brows. Here’s what happens month by month, why the touch-up in the first weeks is key, and when the annual top-up is due to keep your result.

What is eyebrow microblading and how long do microbladed brows last?

Microblading is a cosmetic procedure, a kind of very shallow semi-permanent tattoo: during the microblading procedure fine hair-like strokes that mimic natural eyebrow hair are drawn one by one, placing microblading pigment in the most superficial part of the skin. Because it doesn’t go as deep as a tattoo, the skin gradually breaks it down. So, depending on your skin, microbladed eyebrows last 12 to 18 months for most people, and can reach 24 months in people with dry skin who protect it from the sun.

Brows that fade over time aren’t a flaw, it’s one of the benefits of microblading: natural-looking eyebrows with a shape and density made for you, which you can adapt to your face and to changing trends, without being stuck with a dark colour for life.

Skin Approximate longevity Recommended top-up
Dry or normal skin 18 to 24 months Every 12 to 18 months
Combination skin 12 to 18 months Every 12 months
Oily skin Usually less than 12 months Depending on how it evolves (or consider shading)

These are guide figures. Two people with the same technique can get different results, which is why we assess it in person.

How long each phase lasts, from the healing process to the first year

Duration is easier to understand in stages, from the first day after the treatment:

  1. First 4 weeks. The healing process: the brow area looks intense, a thin scab forms, falls off and the brows look lighter. We explain it in detail in when does microblading colour settle.
  2. Between weeks 4 and 6. A check to see which strokes have taken and which haven’t, once your brows heal and the colour has settled.
  3. Months 2 to 12. The result is at its best: defined, natural and with no need for makeup.
  4. From one year on. The strokes start to fade and lose sharpness. Time to book the top-up session to keep your long-term microblading results.

Why is the first touch-up at 4 to 6 weeks so important?

While your brows heal after the first treatment, your skin decides how much pigment it keeps, and it never does so evenly across the brow. This second appointment is used to fill in strokes that have healed too light, adjust the intensity and refine the design. Without it, the result usually looks patchy and lasts considerably less.

What happens if you skip that appointment at 30 to 45 days? What took stays, but with gaps, and the colour fades sooner. If you want the best results, this appointment isn’t optional.

Antonella’s tip: book that second appointment on the day of your first visit. That way it’s in your diary right when your skin is ready.

Microblading after one year

After a year microbladed brows look softer: the hair strokes are still there, but less crisp, and the shade is lighter. That’s normal. Some people notice one eyebrow fades before the other, because they sleep on that side or touch it more.

At that point you have two options. You can let it keep fading until it has almost gone, or have a top-up to bring back definition. The top-up is shorter than the first session, because we start from a design that already exists.

Does it disappear completely or is there always something left? In most cases it fades until it is barely visible, though sometimes a very faint trace of colour remains. It isn’t permanent like a tattoo, and if at some point you want it gone sooner, with laser or other methods, we explain how in microblading removal.

Microblading touch ups: price and how often

At BLUSH the annual top-up costs €170, compared with €270 for the full session. We recommend it every 12 to 18 months, depending on how your brows look. There’s no need to wait until they have completely faded: if you top up while they’re still visible, the session is simpler and the result more even.

  • Eyebrow microblading: €270 (session of about 120 minutes)
  • Microblading + shading (hybrid brows): €300
  • Annual top-up: €170

All our prices are on the microblading price page. Antonella personally performs every session and every top-up, so your design stays consistent year after year.

Factors that can affect the pigment

How long microblading lasts for you also depends on the pigments used and on the skill of your technician. Some habits can affect the pigment and make the effect of microblading last longer or shorter. The main ones:

Your skin

Oily skin pushes the pigment out sooner and blurs the strokes. In those cases powder brows or a combination finish is sometimes better.

Sun exposure

UV radiation can cause the pigment to fade and change its tone. Use sunscreen on your brows once they have healed.

Skincare

Exfoliants, retinoids, acids or peels on the area make it fade faster. Keep them off your brows.

Aftercare

Picking the scab or getting the area wet before the brows heal means losing colour from the start.

If you notice yours fading sooner than expected, we explain why in depth in why does microblading fade.

How to make your result last longer

  • Follow the essential aftercare in the first weeks.
  • Don’t miss the check at 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Apply sunscreen to your brows all year round.
  • Clean the area with gentle products and avoid acids and exfoliants on the brow.
  • Book your annual maintenance before the brows have completely faded.

That way you save time every morning and keep perfect brows without relying on a pencil. If you’re considering microblading eyebrows, our microblading in Málaga page explains how we work on the design, also ideal if you have sparse brows.

FAQ: how long does microblading last?

Is microblading permanent?

No. Unlike a regular tattoo, it’s semi permanent: the pigment stays in the upper layer of the skin and lightens over the months. That’s why it needs a top-up roughly once a year.

How long does microblading last without a touch-up?

It usually lasts less and fades unevenly, because strokes that didn’t take at first are never completed. The appointment at 4 to 6 weeks is what sets the result with a natural colour.

And on oily skin?

On oily skin it usually lasts less than a year and the strokes tend to blur sooner. We’ll assess whether a technique with shading suits you better.

How much does a microblading top-up cost?

At BLUSH the annual top-up costs €170. It’s shorter than the first session because we start from the design you already have.

How long does the microblading session take?

The session lasts about 120 minutes, including the design beforehand, which is the part we spend most time on.

What if I had it done somewhere else?

Message us and we’ll first assess the colour and shape you have left. If the pigment has changed tone, it may need correcting before a top-up; we explain it in microblading gone wrong.

Due a top-up or want to get started?
