Eyebrow tattoo vs microblading: key differences, pros and cons, and how to fix an old tattoo

Many people call any pigmented brow a «tattooed eyebrow», but traditional eyebrow tattooing and microblading have nothing in common in depth, longevity or finish. Here we explain what’s the difference between eyebrow tattooing and microblading and why it matters, and what can be done if you already have an old tattoo you don’t like.

What is a traditional eyebrow tattoo?

Traditional tattooing of the brows uses a machine and traditional tattoo ink designed to last forever. Tattoo artists using this type of tattoo deposit a lot of ink in the dermis, the deep layer of the skin, just like a tattoo on your arm. For years it was the only form of eyebrow enhancement that saved you from makeup, which is why many people still have one from ten or twenty years ago.

The problem appears with time. The tattoo ink will fade a little but never go away; instead it changes hue over time: brown and black tones tend to turn blue or green, or greyish, and the edges blur and spread. On top of that, the shape that was fashionable back then (very thin, very arched or solid block brows) won’t necessarily suit your face today.

What is microblading and why isn’t it a traditional tattoo?

Microblading is a form of cosmetic tattoo, but a very different one. It is a semi permanent technique, and microblading is done by hand, with a very fine microneedle tool (the Japanese technique known as tebori). Instead of filling the brow in as a block, microblading uses individual hair-like strokes that mimic natural eyebrow hair, so the fine lines of microblading look like natural hair. Microblading pigments are a different kind of ink: the strokes put pigment into the skin only as far as the epidermis, the upper layer, as we explain in what layer of skin microblading goes into, which is why the strokes fade over time: it lasts between 1 and 2 years (on dry and combination skin it usually lasts longer than on oily skin, often a year and a half or more) and is kept up with a regular top-up. It’s a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment, and the microblading artist can use a topical anesthetic so it’s comfortable. Done well, nobody can tell: you just have natural eyebrows.

That’s why, when someone searches for a hair stroke brow tattoo or wants to tattoo eyebrows with a natural look, they almost always really want to get microblading: hair-stroke brows with a natural shape, without the commitment of a permanent tattoo. The design can also be personalised for each client: thickness, arch and shade are adjusted to the shape of your brows and your features.

Price at BLUSH We don’t do it €270 €270 (combined €300)

At BLUSH we don’t do the permanent eyebrow tattoo; none of our eyebrow tattooing techniques is permanent. Our treatments are semi-permanent: eyebrow permanent makeup with microblading, shading or a combination of both, depending on your skin type and the result you’re after.

Pros and cons of a permanent eyebrow tattoo

Pros

Saves time: no need to do your brows every day. Stands up to water, sweat and the beach. And it doesn’t need frequent top-ups.

Cons

The result is less natural, the colour changes over the years and, because it’s permanent, correcting it or changing the brow shape takes more work and several sessions.

Microblading keeps the good part (waking up without makeup and having perfect brows first thing) and removes what people most regret about tattoos: colour that shifts and no way of adapting as your face changes.

How to fix an old brow tattoo without making it worse

If you have an eyebrow tattoo that has turned bluish, too dark or has a shape that no longer feels like you, it usually can’t be «covered» directly with microblading. Over the dense, deep ink used for eyebrow tattooing the new strokes get lost and the old colour keeps showing through. The usual route is this:

  1. Assessment. Every correction starts here: Antonella checks the colour, the approximate depth and the shape of the tattoo to decide what’s needed.
  2. Laser lightening. At BLUSH we use laser to lighten old pigment, at €50 per session. Several sessions are usually needed, leaving weeks between them so the skin can recover; the number depends on the ink and how much needs lightening.
  3. A new design. Once the tattoo has softened, a brow shape suited to your face today is drawn.
  4. Microblading or shading on top. The brows are pigmented with the technique that best covers what’s left: hair strokes if the base is light, shading or combination brows if there is leftover colour, or to cover patchy eyebrows.

If you’d like to know all the options, including complete removal, we explain them in microblading removal.

Antonella’s tip: don’t try to cover a bluish tattoo with a darker pigment. It looks fine for a few weeks, but you end up with a thicker, darker brow than the one you wanted to get rid of. Lighten first, then design.

A client with old bluish brow pigmentation starts her laser correction at BLUSH.

“Antonella fue muy amable y estoy súper contenta con mi primera sesión de láser, volveré todas las veces necesarias. Lo super recomiendo.”

“Antonella was very kind and I’m really happy with my first laser session. I’ll come back as many times as needed. I super recommend it.”

“Me hice microblanding en las cejas y me encantó, devolvieron la vida a mis cejas, me dejaron un diseño bonito y la atención fue muy amable.”

“I had microblading on my brows and loved it. They brought my brows back to life, gave me a lovely design and the service was very kind.”

Which brows make your face look younger?

A brow that is too thin, very dark or has a hard edge hardens your expression and adds years, which is exactly what tends to happen with old tattoos. A brow look with some density, a soft start and a shade (or a tint) that matches your hair colour opens up the eyes and helps your face look fresher. If your brows have thinned over the years, filling the sparse areas with fine strokes usually looks fresher than making them darker. Full brows with soft edges look natural; brows drawn with a ruler don’t. That’s why a good design and a cosmetic tattoo artist’s experience matter more than the technique itself. You don’t need to become a microblading artist to judge it: look at healed microbladed brows in their portfolio.

FAQs about eyebrow tattoo vs microblading

Microblading vs tattoo: which is better?

For a natural result, microblading. A tattoo is permanent and its colour changes over the years; microblading is semi-permanent, finer and can be adapted over time.

How long do tattooed eyebrows last?

A classic eyebrow tattoo is permanent, although it lightens and changes colour. Microblading lasts 1 to 2 years and is kept up with an annual top-up (€170 at BLUSH).

Can you have microblading over tattooed brows?

Only if the tattoo is very faded. If it’s dark or bluish, it’s usually lightened with laser first and then microblading or shading is done on top.

How much does it cost to lighten tattooed eyebrows?

At BLUSH, laser removal of eyebrow permanent makeup costs €50 per session. The number of sessions is assessed in person.

Do microblading and tattooing hurt?

For the microblading procedure a topical numbing cream is applied and it feels like a light scratching or stinging. Laser is described as small, brief snaps of heat that are easy to tolerate.

How do I do my makeup over tattooed brows while I lighten them?

With a pencil or powder in a cool or ash tone that neutralises the blue, and a pomade or gel to add hair texture. It’s just a stopgap while the process lasts.
