Why do eyebrows itch after microblading? Brow aftercare instructions to soothe them

Your eyebrows itch after microblading because the skin is healing: the tiny strokes close up, a thin crust forms and the area dries out and flakes. That itch is normal. It usually starts around day 3 or 4 and fades by about day 10, when the crust comes away. The one thing that matters is not to scratch.

Why your brow itches during the healing process

During the microblading procedure, very fine strokes are drawn by hand with a manual tool and pigment is placed in the upper layer of the skin. To your skin, every stroke is a tiny cut, and it reacts as it would to any scratch: mild inflammation for the first few days, then a scab, then regeneration. That skin’s natural healing process is what makes the eyebrow area itchy, for three reasons:

The scab

A very thin crust forms over the cuts in the skin and pulls as it dries. Once it starts to lift, it itches.

Dryness

The new skin dries out and begins to flake, just like a healing tattoo. Dry skin always itches more.

Regeneration

The top layer of skin is renewing itself. Light inflammation and that renewal feel like a tingle or an itch.

In other words, itchy brows don’t mean something has gone wrong: they mean your eyebrow is following the normal microblading healing process, so trust the process. We explain it phase by phase in the microblading healing stages, day by day.

How long does the itch last after microblading?

Days What you will notice
Days 1 and 2 Redness, some swelling and a tight feeling. Very little itch.
Day 3 to day 7 The scab forms and the itch starts, stronger whenever the skin dries out. By day 4 most people notice it.
Around day 14 The skin is smooth again, though the brow is not fully healed until about 4 weeks.
Days 7 to 10 The flakes come away. The itch eases off until it disappears.
After the touch-up The same process repeats, usually shorter and milder.

Every skin type has its own pace: on oily skin the crust is less visible and the itch tends to be milder; on dry skin the flaking is more noticeable. If you want to know when this phase ends, read when the microblading scab falls off.

What to do when your eyebrows itch: microblading aftercare

  1. Resist the urge to scratch. Scratching or rubbing pulls the crust off too early and the pigment goes with it: you are left with patchy gaps and a higher risk of irritation.
  2. Tap around the brow, not on it. If the itch is strong, press gently with a clean fingertip next to the eyebrow, never on the strokes. Make sure your hands are washed first.
  3. Moisturise with a tiny amount. Apply the aftercare ointment we recommend, usually morning and night. A rice grain amount is enough: the pigmented area should be hydrated, not wet or damp. Too much cream suffocates the skin and can make you lose pigment. Proper healing depends on it; all the post care is in how to moisturise your eyebrows after microblading.
  4. Clean the area gently. If you need to clean it, use clean water and a sterile gauze, dabbing, never rubbing. When you wash your face, keep the area out of the shower stream.
  5. Avoid heat and sweat. Direct sun, sauna, steam and intense exercise make the itch worse. Protecting the area from heat helps the pigment settle; sunscreen only once there is no crust left. Here is what happens with sun exposure after microblading, which matters on the Costa del Sol.
  6. No exfoliants and no makeup. Don’t put scrubs, acids or makeup on the brow until it has healed.

Antonella’s tip: the itch is usually worst at night. Sleep on your back if you can and keep your nails short those days: most clients who scratch do it in their sleep.

When the itch is not normal: microblading infection or allergic reaction

A light itch with some redness in the first days is expected. What is not normal is for it to get worse instead of better. Contact whoever did your treatment if you notice:

  • Redness or swelling that increases after the first few days.
  • Heat, growing pain, discharge or thick yellowish crusts, which can be signs of a microblading infection.
  • An intense itch that doesn’t ease after day 10, or small bumps around the brow, which can point to irritation or a rare allergic reaction.

If the area looks infected or inflamed, also see a doctor: they are the right person to assess it. At BLUSH Estética we check on every client throughout healing, so you can message us with any question, in English via WhatsApp if that is easier.

Do microblading and permanent makeup itch the same?

Yes, both do. Whether you had hair strokes or a shaded technique such as microshading or powder brows, the skin goes through the same healing: the first 7 days bring a crust, flaking and itch. With shading it tends to be more even and the flaking feels like a fine film. The care instructions after treatment are the same for any semi-permanent pigment treatment.

Does the itch affect your result?

The itch itself doesn’t, but what you do about it does. Scratching is one of the most common causes of pigment loss and areas with less colour. If a flake has come off too early anyway, don’t worry: small irregularities are corrected at the touch-up appointment, the second session, 4 to 6 weeks after the first. That is how you end up with natural, even brows. To understand what else affects how long the colour lasts, read why microblading fades.

Microblading itching: frequently asked questions

Is it normal for my eyebrows to itch?

Yes. It is part of the healing process and is usually concentrated between day 3 and day 10.

What can I put on my eyebrows to stop the itch?

Only the moisturising ointment your brow artist recommends, in a very thin layer. Avoid perfumed creams, oils or home remedies.

How do I clean my brows once microbladed?

With clean water and a sterile gauze, dabbing gently without rubbing, following the instructions we give you on the day of your session.

Is microblading painful?

Most clients describe it as a manageable discomfort, with numbing applied before undergoing the procedure. Afterwards, what you notice most is the itch while healing, not pain.

Do eyebrows itch after the touch up appointment too?

Yes, but it is usually shorter and milder, because less area is worked on.
