Microblading scabbing: when scabs fall off and how the healing process goes

The microblading scab forms around day 3 or 4 and falls off on its own between day 7 and day 10 after the treatment, although on some skin it takes up to 14 days. It comes away gradually, in fine flakes, not all at once across the brow. Never pick it: you’d take the pigment with it. Here is the whole scabbing process day by day, with the aftercare tips that protect your microblading results.

Why does scabbing after microblading happen?

Scabbing is a natural part of the healing process of the skin, not a sign that something has gone wrong. In microblading, tiny, very shallow incisions are made in the epidermis to deposit the pigment stroke by stroke. The skin reacts as it would to any small wound: lymph dries over the strokes and thin scabs form on top, protecting the area while a new layer of skin grows underneath.

A good microblading artist or microblading technician works at the right depth so that the crust is thin and the skin doesn’t scar. Heavy scabbing is usually a sign that the work was too deep or that the area hasn’t been looked after properly.

The microblading healing process: when the scab falls off, day by day

Immediately after the procedure your new brows look bold and there may be a little redness. This is how the initial healing phase usually goes:

Day What happens with the scab
Days 1 to 2 Brows look darker and more intense. No scab yet, just a little lymph
Days 3 to 4 Scabs start to form: small and thin, and the skin feels tight
Days 5 to 7 Scabs start to loosen and the itching begins
Days 7 to 10 Most of them naturally fall away on their own
Days 10 to 14 The last little flakes go. The colour looks dull (ghosting phase)

Around day 7 the crusts weaken and start to come away, and by day 10 almost all of them have gone: in most cases the scabs will naturally fall off if you leave them alone. It’s completely normal for one brow to heal faster than the other, or for the left brow to still have flakes when the right one is already clear. The full process is in the microblading healing stages, day by day.

What kind of scabbing and peeling is normal?

It depends on your skin type and on the microblading procedure:

  • Mature or dry skin: more visible crusts, like small flakes over each stroke.
  • Young or oily skin: lighter, almost like fine peeling, because the skin regenerates quickly.
  • Microshading: with shaded semi-permanent makeup the crust is thinner, almost a fine powder.

Watch out for thick crusts, pustules or yellowish discharge. They aren’t usual, but they can affect the pigment and you should message us. If there are any signs of infection, see your doctor as well.

What happens when the scab falls off?

When the crusts come away from microbladed brows, many clients get a fright: the colour looks lighter, greyish or patchy. This is the ghosting phase and it’s perfectly normal. The pigment is still there, under the new layer of skin, which is still slightly opaque. Between day 14 and day 28 the pigment starts to show again and the colour settles into its final shade. We explain it in when microblading colour settles.

Aftercare tips while the scab falls off

Proper aftercare at this stage of healing is what protects pigment retention. Follow the aftercare instructions we give you and keep the area clean:

  • Avoid picking or scratching. If you remove a crust too early you take the pigment with it and leave a gap: that’s how most pigment loss happens.
  • If it itches, tap gently around it, never on top. Here is why eyebrows itch after microblading.
  • Gentle cleansing with water and a mild soap, by dabbing, only as we tell you. When you wash your face, avoid getting your eyebrows wet more than needed and let them get completely dry.
  • Minimal moisturising: a very thin layer of the cream or aftercare ointment we recommend. See how to moisturise your eyebrows after microblading.
  • No steam or sweat: avoid the sauna, swimming pools and intense exercise until it has fallen off, because moisture softens it and it comes off too early.
  • No makeup on the brow, and keep out of direct sunlight when you go out (a cap or shade while the skin is open). On the Costa del Sol, keep beach days for after the scabs have gone.
  • Sleep on your back if you can, so the pillow doesn’t rub your brow.

Antonella’s tip: the temptation to remove «that last little flake» is huge, especially in the shower. Resist: almost every gap we see at the touch-up comes from a crust that was picked off.

How can I speed up the scab falling off?

You shouldn’t. It comes off when the skin underneath is ready, and forcing it only makes you lose pigment. What does make a difference is not interfering: hygiene, very little cream, no scratching and patience. A smooth healing process with proper care is the best guarantee that the pigment settles well and you end up with natural-looking brows.

How long does microblading take to heal?

The surface heals when the scab falls off, around day 10, but the whole microblading healing process takes about 4 weeks. The touch-up is booked 4 to 6 weeks after the treatment: at the touch-up session the details are refined and any gaps are filled in. By week 4 the skin is no longer sensitive and you can go back to your normal routine. If you’re wondering how long the result lasts, read how long microblading lasts.

FAQs about microblading scabbing

Is it normal for the microblading scab to fall off after 2 days?

It isn’t usual. If it comes off very early, it’s normally because of moisture or rubbing. Message us and we’ll check it at the touch-up.

What do I do if a crust has come off by accident?

Nothing: don’t apply anything special or any makeup. If pigment has been lost in that area, it is filled in at the touch-up.

Can I wash my brows while they are scabbing?

Yes, with water and a mild soap, dabbing gently without rubbing. Pat them dry too.

How long does eyebrow microblading take to heal?

Scabs fall off between day 7 and day 10, and the skin finishes healing in about 4 weeks. Microblading is semi-permanent, so the result then lasts well over a year.

Why hasn’t my microblading scabbed?

On oily or young skin the scab is so thin it is barely visible. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong.
